Oh, for the good old days, when “scooters” meant toys which children, usually boys, rode.  It was a vehicle consisting of a footboard mounted on two wheels with a long steering column and started by pushing off with one foot.

You rode it standing up, and it was propelled by the force you gave it and the slope of the hill you were going down.  It wasn’t much good going up hills!

Nowadays, you can find an old style kick scooter around, but more commonly the standup models have a little motor.

You can find new and used scooters of various types, including racing, mini, vintage, and micro.

Also, the term “scooter” is used for many other types of vehicles.

The old moped term is pretty much out, but motorcycle scooters are in with various sized motors.

Then, too, there are mobility scooters which are three or four-wheeled vehicles, designed for people with limited walking ability.

When selecting a scooter, of course, you have to consider who will be riding it and where.

Not all scooters are street legal, and some types require a license to drive.  Consider buying scooter accessories as well, such as helmets and locks.
